About Us
Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue Inc is a CA registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which was formed in 2004 by experienced horse people, who, after deriving many years of pleasure working with these sentient, sensitive animals, wanted to give something back to them by way of the important and badly needed services which we provide today.
Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue operates throughout California. We have foster facilities in California, Nevada and New Mexico. Our adoption center is in Silver Lakes, CA. The Lancaster ranch is currently undergoing a makeover. We wish to replace the existing pipe corrals with larger wooden ones which will create a safer and more tranquil setting for the horses. During this makeover a number of the horses have been moved to a foster facility in Lancaster. We hope to have the necessary work completed by the end of November.
We provide rescue, rehabilitation, adoption and retirement for horses from many different situations of abuse and neglect. The targeted end result of our work is to place every rescued horse into our adoption program where they can find a new loving and caring home.
Horses which cannot be rehabilitated for adoption due to long term illness, old age, injury or some social difficulty will be retired at our rescue/sanctuary where they can live out the rest of their days in a caring and loving environment with dignity and the quality of life they deserve. We are honored each and every day to work with these beautiful horses and provide them the specialist care and training they need which will give them a happy and healthy future.
Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue, Inc is proud members of The American Humane Society and A.S.P.C.A. Our rescue programs are carried out in alliance with local veterinary and animal welfare agencies.
About the Horses About the Horses
Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue has been pro-active in and around our community saving many horses from a variety of different situations. Whether it has been from the auction yard and the killer buyers, racetrack, PMU farm or a private residence, we are committed to ensure the welfare and dignity of all horses. All of the horses which arrive at our rescue have their own unique story about how they came to be here, however the one thing they all have in common is a need of being given the opportunity to have a happy and healthy life.
Thoroughbreds from the Racing World
At the end of a Thoroughbred's racing career their futures can be very uncertain. Despite giving their best efforts at the track a horse's career can be cut short through injury or simply because they were not fast enough to race. These horses however can have a happy and productive life in some other discipline away from the track. It is not uncommon for racing Thoroughbreds to excel at Show jumping and Dressage, or simply to be a happy trail horse, all they require is a second chance. We have helped a number of Thoroughbreds to find a new and happy life and we will continue to make ourselves available to help any horse who can no longer race. We have recently taken a new initiative toward those Thoroughbred's who cannot continue with their racing careers or participate in our re-training and rehabilitation programs by dedicating a part of our ranch for their permanent retirement. These horses will be able to live the rest of their lives in a caring and peaceful environment. We are very proud to be associated with Thoroughbred Charities of America who's mission is "To provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue and research and by helping the people who work with them" For more information contact http://www.tca.org
PMU Horses
A PMU horse is one that was either used on a PMU farm or foaled from one of the mares on the farm. A PMU farm is where mares are bred so that their urine can be collected. From the urine a hormone can be extracted to make a hormone replacement drug which is often prescribed to ease the symptoms associated with menopause. Some years ago there were, in the Northern USA and Canada hundred's of PMU Farms. The foals born each year numbered about 60,000 and 70% of these ended up going to slaughter. The foals were considered a by-product and no thought given to their welfare. Unfortunately, the mares too were treated far from humanely. They were bred over and over to maximize the urine extraction process. They are kept on a production line environment having to stand constantly with a bag attached to collect the urine. Their lives are far from good.
The PMU industry, which is self regulating!! claim to have made improvements in the conditions at the farms. Thankfully
many PMU farms have closed. There are however still many thousand's of mares still on production lines producing urine and foals.
We feel very strongly against the use of the mares for this drug production. Even if improvements in conditions have been made it is still an unacceptable situation. We cannot forget the terrible treatment endured by thousands of horses. We still believe that many horses are at risk today.
For more information about the PMU farms you can visit www.premarin.org . This is an extremely informative website and is well worth viewing. Also take a look at www.equineadvocates.com and see the conditions of the urine collection process for yourself. The Humane Society of The United States www.humanesociety.org and www.aspca.org will also give you an in depth picture of these urine farms .
Many of the horses which arrive at our rescue have been the victims of inhumane care. Even basic maintenance such as farrier care, worming and vaccinations have sadly been ignored. It is therefore important that we correct this situation prior to any re-training or rehabilitation. Each horse receives evaluation and an appropriate feeding and exercise program is put in place. Many of the problems we encounter concern the horses feet. A lack of proper attention can contribute to, and cause problems in other areas. We place much importance on firstly fixing any feet problems before moving forward.
Horse Sponsorship
Horse Sponsorship
We have 82 horses at the ranch and in our foster care at this time. The Majority of these horses need permanent sponsorship, however a few will only need help for 6 - 12 months while they complete training, recover from injuries and improve their general condition. After rehabilitation they will become available for adoption into new permanent homes.
To sponsor one horse each month would cost $140. This covers food, farrier, worming and yearly vaccination boosters. Sponsorship donations may be sent by check, money order, credit card or by

Deborah
Hello my name is Deborah and I am 7 years old. I was a PMU foal. When I arrived at Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue I was very undernourished and needed a lot of special growth supplements. Due to being so badly treated before my rescue, I am quite shy, and I have some soundness issues due to my rough start in life. I am a permanent resident here where I enjoy my days in a field with friends just being a horse.

Hello my name is Cheryln. I am a lovely Thoroughbred mare in my late teens. I have been a broodmare for many years and have now retired. The breeding farm that I was at suddenly closed its doors and I was forced to find a new home, thats when I came across Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue. I was offered a home here and was able to give birth to my son Roberto safely and I know now that we will both be happy and safe forever.

Over the last few years of being ridden I became increasingly lame and was very glad to be retired here at Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue. I am going to live happily ever after with my best friend Melody.

Hello, may name is Roberto and I am a 4 year old Thoroughbred. I was born at Castleton Ranch a few months after my mother Cheryln was rescued from a feedlot. As a foal I was just as any regular foal should be but later as a yearling I developed "contracted tendons". The Vet said we should try and let me grow naturally for a short while but instead of getting better my legs got worse until the only hope for me was an expensive surgery called "Check Ligament Surgery". My surgery, training, lay-up, aftercare and farrier would amount to several thousand dollars but thanks to Donna, Pam, Tamara, Rachelle, Annette, Lois and many more of our wonderful and caring donors, I was able to have my surgery and my great recovery has even surprised our Vet.

Elliot Elliot
Hello my name is Elliot. I am a 26 year old Purebred Arabian gelding and a grandson of Bask. I was given to Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue as I could no longer do my job as a riding school horse due to injury to my back. Luckily for me my owner took the time to find a permanent retirement place for me instead of sending me to auction or worse. I am extremely cute and have the loudest whinny in California. I have a great life here where I get to play out everyday with my new friends. I am best friends with Teddy Bear and I do not like to be separated for more than 5 minutes from him.
In December 2008 I had attacks of bad colic and the vet said I had life threatening stomach sand stones. Thanks to Tamara, Kim and many of our wonderful and caring donors funds were raised so I could have an emergency operation to remove the stones, one of which was the size of a melon!!
Elliot has very kindly been sponsored by The Grace Elliott Family.
Thank you so much!

Hello, my name is Melody and I am 13 year's old. I was rescued by Castleton Ranch from an auction. I had received a bad injury to one of my fetlock's which had gone untreated by my previous owner. As a result of this, the injury got much worse and the joint had swollen to three times the size and was rock hard. I had a great deal of difficulty walking properly and I would certainly have faced an uncertain future. Happily, since my arrival at Castleton Ranch, my situation has improved dramatically. I have been receiving regular massage therapy to my injured joint and my back which also sustained damage due to the time spent compensating for my lameness, now the swelling on the joint is reducing slowly. I also wear easy boots sometimes which helps a lot with my front feet.

Teddy Teddy
Hello my name is Teddy Bear. I too was rescued from an auction by Castleton Ranch Horse Rescue. I am a Standardbred that had been racing in Canada. I won over $200K for my owners but that meant nothing when I could no longer win due to my handlers winding me. This meant I would make a roaring noise when I was breathing due to a paralysis in my lyrinx that would affect my breathing during a race. To make my life outside of harness racing even harder, I am what is known as a Pacer. I cannot lope or trot correctly and thus would be no use to even light trail riding. Not many people require a horse that can only walk everywhere making a loud snoring noise. I am a permanent resident here and and I am looking to you to help with my feed and farrier costs. Thank you for reading my story.

As a result both my front knees set out of alignment and it is difficult for me to walk. I have to have permanent stable rest and corrective shoes. Unfortunately I cannot even be adopted out as a pasture pal. I would be very grateful if you will sponsor me so that we can rescue more horses that are in great need.
